TriMet is beginning to toss around names for its newest baby, the Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail Bridge, and the agency is looking for suggestions.

The public transportation agency is currently engaged in a planning process for naming the bridge, and plans to assign a small “blue ribbon” committee this summer to shepherd the public process. Proposed members include the former executive director of the Oregon Historical Society, a TriMet board member, a representative from a river users group, and others.

The PMLR bridge will be the first to cross over the Willamette River in more than 40 years, so the naming process is likely to garner a lot of interest from community members. TriMet’s customer information services department will be creating a public information/participation campaign, possibly similar to the process the Oregon Zoo uses for naming its animals.

TriMet is shooting to have a name selected by the end of 2014.
